We actually passed The Big Texan on our way from Atlanta to California, and the second I saw it I knew there was no way we were making the return trip without stopping. So, on the way back home, we did exactly that, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. The Big Texan Steak Ranch & Brewery is one of those places that feels like it was made for a cross-country road trip. It is big, loud, colorful, delightfully over-the-top, and packed with exactly the kind of Texas and Route 66 personality you want from a stop like this. Between the Western decor, giant signs, famous 72-ounce steak challenge, brewery, and all the little details everywhere you look, the whole place is an experience before the food even hits the table. And the food was genuinely delicious. The steaks were excellent, the portions were appropriately Texas-sized, and having their own brewery on site made it even better. After hours on the road, sitting down with a good steak and a cold beer was exactly what we needed. An unforgettable, Texas-sized experience on Route 66! You cannot drive through the Texas Panhandle without stopping at the legendary Big Texan Steak Ranch. From the second you arrive and spot the massive cow statue out front, you know you are in for a wildly entertaining evening. The interior is a massive, two-story western saloon packed with kitschy charm, taxidermy, a fun shooting gallery, and a massive gift shop. There was even a strolling cowboy guitar player playing music right by the tables, which made the vibe so fun!The food absolutely lived up to the hype. We didn't brave the 72-ounce steak challenge, but we had an incredibly fun time watching the brave people up on the center stage trying to finish it. Instead, we ordered the ribeye and the prime rib, and both were juicy, perfectly seasoned, and cooked exactly to our liking. The standout sides were definitely the green chili creamed corn and the fried okra. Make sure to wash it all down with a cold craft beer from their on-site brewery-their Pecan Porter and Rattlesnake IPA are fantastic! You can call the Big Texan a kitschy tourist trap if you wish but their food is seriously good especially the Wagyu chicken fried steak done to perfection. It is a very inviting stop after a long road trip. The lobby has a carnival feel great for traveling kids in need of a break. They brew their own beer which is very good. If you want a good view of the massive dining room, sit in the balcony. Outdoor seating available. VERY friendly staff. Nice respite from a day of driving.

This place was fun. Unfortunately our experience wasn't the greatest. It took quite a bit of time for the waitress to get to us to ask for drinks, refills, and take our order. When our order was brought to us, the wrong steak and cook of the steak was brought to me without added items. My dad's steak was cooked incorrectly and had added items he never ordered. I brought this up and we got new steaks. But when the waitress took the wrong food away, she left the side dishes. So we were forced to eat the side dishes without our steaks because everything was going to be cold by the time she came back with the new steaks. When she came back she brought more side dishes which was nice but I wish I would've known so I didn't eat the side dish that was cold and now too full to eat. My dad's steak was still cooked incorrectly. It was fun to sit next to random people and my streak was good when it was done right. It was fun to see people try the competition and of course fail lol. They have a live view of the competition on their website if you wanted to watch. Overall it was something nice to do and was better than Texas Roadhouse by far for comparable prices so worth the visit.

We stopped at the legendary Big Texan Steak Ranch for dinner on a Saturday around 5 PM, and even though there was about a 45-minute wait, it honestly didn’t feel that long at all. There’s a few things to see and do while you wait — a gift shop, shooting gallery, rocking chairs, and benches all around the front porch to wait. The whole place feels like an experience, not just a restaurant. You can tell people come from all over just to visit. The service was quick and friendly, the food came out fast, and everything was delicious. My steak was cooked perfectly, and I was honestly surprised that the prices were pretty reasonable for a place this famous. We even got to take our cups home as souvenirs, which was a fun touch. One of the coolest parts was seeing the display showing the size of the steak used for the famous 72 oz steak challenge, along with photos of the fastest winners. Absolutely crazy to see in person. If you’re headed to Amarillo, this is one of those places you’ll definitely want to say you stopped at. Great food, great atmosphere, and a really memorable experience.
